I’ve heard this story before. More times than you would believe. You just ordered a new Mya Hookah and you are pumped. The UPS tracking page shows that it’s being delivered today. Soon enough your awesome new hookah and maybe a couple of new flavors of Romman Shisha Tobacco or Al Tawareg Shisha Tobacco will be in your hands. The moment finally comes, the box arrives. You tear it open and what do you find inside??? A locked hard case with your hookah inside of it.

The best thing to do right now is NOT PANIC. Here are a couple of tips for you, the safety conscious hookah connoisseur, on how to get your case open and the combination set, the right way.

First things first, let’s get this baby open. By default, all cases with a combination lock will have their passwords set to 000. To open the case, make sure it is set to 000 and slide the button next to the lock towards the numbers until you see the lock pop open. Depending on the specific case you have, you may have one lock, or you may have two.

Your case may have a red plastic tab running through the number rollers on your combination lock, if your case has this plastic part on there, do not remove it until you have the case unlocked and open. The plastic tab is there to allow you to set your own combination. To set the combination follow these steps.

1) Open the lock and remove the red plastic tab.

2) With the lock open, push the button towards the numbers and hold it in place.

3) With the button held in place, move the number rollers to your desired combination.

4) Release the button and your combination has been set!

With these tips in hand, tackling your hookah’s new hard carrying case will be a breeze. If you have any questions on this or anything else hookah related feel free to contact our resident hookah ninjas in customer service who will be happy to help you out.

Everyone has that friend that can blow massive hookah smoke rings and makes it look easy, and I know some of you have tried with unimpressive results. In this post I hope to give you a quick science lesson and provide proper hookah smoke ring instructions so you can puff like the pros!

First, let’s talk science. What exactly is going on when hookah smoke rings form? Smoke rings are an atomic dance. The air we breathe is, to put it simply, an invisible floating “soup” of atoms, with nitrogen and oxygen composing about 99% of the soup. Hookah Smoke is composed of atoms as well (particulate matter), mostly water vapor and other uncombusted hydrocarbons. When hookah smoke molecules are propelled through the soup in a circular shape, they interact with the air molecules, creating a vortex in which the outer molecules of the smoke ring are dragged backwards while the inner molecules are dragged forwards. This concept is demonstrated visually in the below animation. The black dots represent air molecules and the red dots represent smoke molecules.

Source

So how do you make the perfect hookah smoke ring? The first and most crucial step is to perfect your “o” face. You have to shape your lips into the closest you can possibly come to a perfect circle. Yes, this takes practice and yes, you will look silly doing it. I recommend using a mirror. There are several ways to achieve this, and every expert “smoke ringer” has their own method. Some purse their lips forward making a “duck face,” and some open their jaw up wide with their lips covering their teeth. You can experiment with different methods, but just remember that the inner rim of your lips must be circular.

Now comes the tricky part, and that’s getting the “bursts” of air through your lips. There are various means for doing this, so based on an informal survey of our staff here are the 3 most popular methods:

1. The “Zoolander Cough”: You’re not going to need your tongue for this, so get it out of the way by pressing it to the bottom of your mouth. You’ll want to take a deep drag off of your hookah hose, then open your throat and try to make your mouth as cavernous as possible. Slowly (and I mean slowly) exhale until just your mouth is filled with dense smoke. Next, you’ll want to stop continuously exhaling, make your “o” face, then produce the tiniest utterance with your throat – almost as if you’re whispering the shortest monosyllabic word possible (“a”, “oh”, “eh”). You’ll want to maintain a sort of exhalation equilibrium: just the right sized “burst” of air. Too much air will cause the ring to collapse; not enough air will produce a non-ring. This is the hardest method, and this takes a lot of practice.

2. The “Pop and Lock”: This method is more muscle control than breath control. Follow the same steps as above until your mouth is as cavernous as possible and filled with dense smoke. Make your “o” face and then pop your jaw forward while simultaneously using your tongue as a springboard, mechanically producing a short burst of air. This is a little easier than the first method, however each successive ring will be less dense than the previous due to a dwindling supply of smoke in your mouth. Again, this takes some practice to perfect.

3. The “Tap”: This is the easiest method and won’t produce any record-breaking rings, but if you do it correctly you can make a succession of small smoke rings that look really neat. Simply fill your mouth with smoke, make your “o” face, and tap your cheek with your index finger while pushing air out of your mouth with your jaw (don’t exhale).

So do you think you’re a pro at blowing hookah smoke rings? Earlier this week we asked our Facebook fans to post their best hookah smoke rings in one of our photography contests, and I’m proud to present the winners.

If you notice that the stem of your Large Mya Saray Hookah (namely the Mya Colossus Hookah) is a little unstable, or if it leans slightly to one side, here’s a simple fix that will make it more stable:

The first step in improving the stability of the Mya shaft is to remove the clear rubber base grommet from the hub to expose the bare base of the hub.

At this point you will notice that there are some threads under the “lip” on the hub. Next we want to thicken the non-threaded portion of the hub to meet the thickness of the threaded portion. This will increase the surface area of grommet that comes into contact with the base to improve shaft stability.

You can use electrical tape wrapped around the non-threaded part of the hub to thicken things up, or if you prefer, two Mya Rubber Band Grommets stacked on top of each other are the perfect thickness. If you choose to use tape, it might help to use a straight edge like a ruler to check that the thickness of the threaded and non-threaded portions of the shaft are the same after adding tape.

Once the tape or rubber band grommets are in place, you can slip the original base grommet back in place on the shaft. When inserting the shaft in the base you will notice that the shaft is now much more stable. Good job!

Everyone that owns a Nammor Hose knows the best way to wash it is to rinse hot water through the mouthpiece and down through the other end. You can’t help but get the yarn that surrounds the mouthpiece wet, can you? I found a fun way around this. You’ll need a Phunnel Bowl or a Vortex Bowl. If you don’t have either of these, you should. The juiciest hookah flavors provide better results when they’re smoked through Phunnel Bowls or Vortex Bowls. So grab one today. Then pick up your Nammor Hose that is in dire need of a cleaning and place the spire end of the Phunnel Bowl into the mouthpiece hole of the hose. Then simply run the hot water through the opposite end of the Phunnel Bowl (or Vortex Bowl) until the water flows all the way through to the other end. Your Nammor Hose will be clean in no time and the yarn will be dry and pretty. It might just make your Nammor Hose look better longer! Simple tip from me to you. Happy Smoking friends!

Several words come to mind when describing Tangiers Hookah Tobacco: Esoteric. Intricate. Loyalty. Let me explain; Tangiers is a hookah tobacco that requires special instructions, care, patience, and work. But once you get Tangiers to smoke right (and believe me it will take some trial and error to get it right), you are a Tangiers fan for life. People swear by this stuff! However, many people can’t get it right and give up. There are tons of videos and discussions all over the internet about how to smoke Tangiers, but you may find some conflicting advice. Let me lay it all out for you:

1. Acclimating your Tangiers Hookah Tobacco: Basically you’re going to need to adjust your Tangiers to your unique climate conditions. Due to varying climates (temperature and humidity play a big role in this), each individual’s acclimation process will be different. Keep in mind that it will need to acclimate in the environment you’re going to smoke it in (you don’t want to acclimate your hookah tobacco in your 45° garage and then smoke it indoors at 75°). Find a wide, shallow container to pour your hookah tobacco into. I find that it’s best to use approximately 100 grams at a time. Mix it well and often. Once an hour is a good starting point. At first, your hookah tobacco will have an aroma similar to soy sauce or barbecue sauce. That’s normal. But if you smoke Tangiers while it is in this state, you will have a harsh, difficult to enjoy session. Keep mixing, exposing all of your hookah tobacco to the air (in other words, without a lid or cover) until the soy sauce smell goes away. Pretend you’re mixing cheese into your macaroni. You wouldn’t want to eat the noodles without the cheese would ya? No. Believe me, you won’t want to smoke this until all of it has been exposed to the air long enough either. A good rule to follow is to wait until your hookah flavor actually smells like what you ordered. Again, this process can take anywhere from 4 hours to several days depending on how often you stir, how consistent your environment is, and how well it’s evenly distributed and exposed to the air. I understand this seems like a lot of information, but trust me, this is very important. Be patient. The payoff will come.

2. Packing your Bowl: Forget what you know about packing hookah tobacco. The rules do not apply here. Grab a Phunnel Bowl, Foil, and a small fork. You will want to pack your hookah bowl as densely as it is in the bag. How do you do this? Easy. Take your small fork and shovel your Tangiers hookah tobacco into your Phunnel Bowl, packing it down firmly until it is flush with the top of your bowl. Make sure you remove all tobacco from around the center spire. Place the foil on top of your bowl, pressing down to compact your hookah tobacco. This will even out any areas of your tobacco and ultimately show you if you need to put more on. The picture below is a good representation of a properly loaded bowl of Tangiers.

3. Air Flow: Once you have the right amount of hookah tobacco in your bowl and it is firmly pressed down (like the picture above), carefully lift the foil off the hookah tobacco just enough to flatten the foil around the bowl. This will create just enough of a passage between the spire and the foil for proper air flow. You’ll want to poke medium sized holes in your foil and a lot of them. I recommend using a thick toothpick. Also, I find you get better air flow if you poke down into the shisha a bit, not just deep enough to puncture the foil. And don’t forget about the center. You’ll want it covered in holes as well. See below.

4. Heat Management: If you’re using square Natural Hookah Charcoals (such as Coco Nara Coals or Exotica Coals), they tend to burn hotter than other coals, so you may want to cut them into 1/2 traingles. Next proceed by putting 2 half triangles on. The key is to start with low heat and then lit it simmer for about a minute. If it’s not smoking right yet, add another half triangle piece. Keep adding heat until you start blowing some majorly thick puffy clouds. I like to rotate my coals while smoking Tangiers quite frequently – every 5 minutes or so. I have a Phunnel Bowl and I end up using 4 or 5 half triangle Coco Nara coals. They only last about 40 minutes, but then again, they’re halves so I’m not wasting a lot of coal. If you’re using Quicklight Hookah Coals, I recommend cutting them into halves as well. You DO NOT want to burn Tangiers hookah tobacco (or any brand of hookah tobacco for that matter). You’ll end up needing to take out all of the burnt shisha and starting over. This requires a bit of patience as well. The key is to start slow with low heat and work your way up.

This may not be the easiest or the fastest brand of hookah tobacco to prepare, but some of their flavors are untouchable! Ever stop to think about how many ingredients and steps go into making something as simple as a cake? I doubt it. All we care about is that the cake tastes delicious. That’s the mentality behind Tangiers Hookah Tobacco. At first, it may seem crazy, overwhelming, and frustrating to get right. But once you get it right, it’s worth it! Consider this a challenge! Happy Smoking friends!

Let me guess. Every bowl of hookah tobacco is starting to taste the same. Or maybe you just loaded your hookah bowl with Starbuzz Pina Colada and all you can taste is the Tangiers Maraschino Cherry from last night’s hookah session. Your hookah may be desperately waiving a white flag! SOS! Help! Clean me! Knowing how to clean your hookah properly (and actually doing it) will exponentially increase your hookah experience. So go grab that unkempt hookah, grab your cleaning supplies, and let’s bring it back to life!

1. Disassemble your hookah: Take off your hookah bowl, grommets, tray, hoses, adapters, and heba diffuser. Unscrew your downstem from the shaft, and if your shaft separates from your hub, detach it as well. Basically if you were to look at your pieces, a stranger should be able to walk up and think to his or herself, “I sure hope that thing comes with instructions”. Become familiar with your hookah and its parts. You’ll want to know how to put it together, take it apart, and be able to fix or troubleshoot any issues that may arise. It only takes a few times doing it yourself for you to fully know your way around your hookah.

2. HOT WATER. Use it. All the time. Don’t go from hot to cold or from cold to hot. You’ll end up cracking your glass base and offending us nerds. I learned this the hard way when my Mya Saray Diva Base busted on me. If you’re interested in learning why hot water is better for cleaning than cold water, research kinetics and entropy. This is not the forum for that topic. Where was I? Right. Use hot water to clean your base and shaft thoroughly.

3. Shaft, hub, and downstem: Remember, cleaning brushes are your friends. If you clean your hookah shaft frequently (as you should), it only takes a few passes from end to end to scrub off any residue that might be lingering behind. If your hookah hasn’t been cleaned in a while, it may take several more minutes of scrubbing. When you look down into your shaft and don’t see that shiny metallic surface, it may be time for a new cleaning brush. Note: cleaning brushes are a lot like toothbrushes. They will eventually become a little dirty with bristles that don’t exactly do what they’re intended to. You wouldn’t brush your teeth with a over-the-hill toothbrush, and you certainly shouldn’t use dirty old cleaning brushes to clean your hookah.

4. Hookah Base: Hot water. Some people use Bling and/or lemon juice. I personally have always used dishwashing soap. I typically use those 3M cleaning pads to scrub my hookah base with. If you cut each one into four equal pieces, they last much longer! Gotta stretch that dollar somehow! But I use a Rotating Hookah so it’s easy to get my hand in there and scrub it all really well. Other hookah bases make it more difficult to get inside them to clean. Here is where your handy little cleaning brush comes in handy. Make sure every crevice has been scrubbed and there are no lingering substances hiding in the corner. Here is where soap and hot water work their magic to loosen up those tough to reach particles (wow I sound like a commercial). Moving on.

5. Grommets and Adapters: You really just want to make sure each grommet (and Heba Diffuser) has been rinsed off. You may also find that using a mild soap on the grommets and Heba Diffusers will help as well. No need to scrub them with cleaning brushes. However, you will want to run a thin cleaning brush through your hose adapters though. Rust has a tendency to build up in these causing your BBs to stick. If your BBs are sticking, you won’t be able to clear your hookah base if you ever need to. And if you’re not careful, you could end up blowing water all the way up the shaft and into your hookah bowl if the BBs stick. You’ll hear three things: Air blowing through the hose, followed by the sound of water sizzling the shisha, followed by everyone in the room shouting, “what did you do that for?” Ah good times. So scrub your hose adapters and make sure your BBs don’t stick. Got it? Good.

6. Hookah Bowl: Treat it like a cereal bowl. No, don’t place it on the floor so that Scratches The Cat can drink from it. That’s not what I’m saying. I am saying to wash it thoroughly, every time. If residue is left behind from bowl to bowl, you’re heating it over and over again and breathing in whatever it is cooking for you. You don’t need an unwanted science project in your lungs. Besides, leftover buildup or residue will ruin a perfectly good hookah bowl in no time.

7. Hoses: If you have Washable Hoses, you’ll want to rinse them with hot water. In other words run hot water into one end of the hose until it flows out the other side. Make sure enough water is passing through to cover the entire circumference of the hose. Once the hose has been rinsed, take the hose to an area where you can swing the excess water out of it. Backyard, bathtub, apartment patio or hallway. If you would rather let your hoses dry naturally, always leave them hanging so water can fall in a downward motion towards the ground. If you point the ends upward, moisture will build up in the middle of your hoses, and sitting water just welcomes all kinds of unwanted bacteria or mold. If you do not have washable hoses, my only recommendation is to air them out. Make sure all the smoke has been blown out of them first. Then you can swing them in a circular motion to get as much of the unwanted particles out.

8. Tray: It’s nice to have a shiny tray before the start of each hookah session, but it doesn’t have to be spotless. As long as it doesn’t have residue that would stick to your coals if you placed them on the tray, you’ll be fine. One quick note though, if you wash your tray with water, make sure all of the moisture has been toweled off before coals are placed on them. A wet coal is no bueno. Not good.

9. Put it all back together!

Take pride in your hookah and enjoy the experience in the best way possible. Now that you know how to clean your hookah, there is no reason why your hookah should ever have to cry out for help. Take care of your hookah and I guarantee your clean hookah will take care of the rest! Try your brand new shisha again, for the first time. Happy Smoking!

If you want to get the most out of your hookah experience, your first step should be deciding whether to use Natural Hookah Coals or Quicklight Hookah Coals. Natural Coals take a few minutes longer to get going, but your hookah tobacco will taste better and your smoking session will last much longer. And who doesn’t want that? Now let’s go over how to light natural coals for your hookah.

Lighting Natural Coals on a conventional oven stove top: THE BEST WAY!

Whether you’re using Romman Natural Lemonwood Coals, Coco Nara Natural Hookah Coals, or some other type of natural coals, the same basic principles apply to each one. If you have a stove, select which burner you’re going to use and turn it on HIGH. Open your box (or bag) of natural coals and place 2-4 coals on the burner — The number of coals depends on your personal preference. Each coal will need to be placed on the burner with enough room between each coal to heat all sides of the coal without interfering with the others. If they’re right next to each other, you may find that they don’t burn evenly. Ever notice how cupcake baking pans are evenly spaced apart?

The same logic applies to heating coals. You’ll want to let the coals heat until all sides of the coals have turned to a thin layer of ash (or completely gray on all sides). Make sure all of the black color is gone before placing them on your hookah bowl. How do you know when they’re ready? You’ll know when they are glowing red. This process usually takes anywhere between 12 and 15 minutes. Some people think it takes too long to heat natural coals, but by the time you clean your hookah and hoses, add ice, load your hookah bowl, and reassemble your hookah, your natural coals will be red hot and ready to go!

Coco Nara Natural Hookah Coals:

NOT READY!

READY!

Exotica Natural Hookah Coals:

NOT READY!

READY!

If you’re using a Portable Hookah Stove to heat your natural coals with, the same basic principles apply. Spread the coals out evenly (as shown) and wait until they’re burning red hot before you place them on your hookah bowl. Make sure the gas is off when you’re done!

IMPORTANT:

1. Turn your burner OFF immediately after your coals are done. If you wait until you’ve taken each coal off to move them to your hookah, you may forget to walk back and turn it off. Safety first!

2. Remember, only handle one coal at a time. We don’t need any accidents! We already know how fast your living room carpet burns and how bad it smells after you drop a coal on it!

3. Always grasp your coals with one side of your tongs underneath the coal. If there is no support under the coal, it’s more likely to slip out of the tongs:

Smoking Hookah is and always will be a social experience. As if I needed to tell you! “Hookah Culture” is a vast umbrella that covers history, customs/traditions, etiquette, atmosphere, and more. Today, as the wave of hookah culture is spreading to newer regions of the world, some traditions get left behind and forgotten. Some, on the other hand, are often ignored. Below is a list of unofficial “rules” that are associated with proper hookah etiquette.

1. The first thing to understand and consider is what I call “house rules”. This is the most important one to remember. If you’re at your friends house and he has a set of rules, follow them. If you’re in another country, know their customs and traditions. You never want to offend your hosts.

2. Usually, the person who sets up the hookah gets to smoke first in the rotation. The person in charge of coals goes second. Does this mean that if you set up the hookah and coals you get a longer turn? Not necessarily. However, some people believe that if you supplied the hookah and/or hookah tobacco, you reserve the right to smoke longer if you so desire.

3. Rotation is always CLOCKWISE (meaning – if you’re in a circle, it is your turn when the person on your right has completed their turn and placed the hose down). So why didn’t I just say “pass it to your left”? Because it is considered rude to pass the hose to someone directly in some parts of the world.

4. If you do pass it to someone, always angle the end of the hose with the mouth tip away from the person you’re giving it to. This rule is frequently ignored. But be aware that you may offend and disrespect your host, fellow participants, or country by overlooking their customs.

5. Speaking of passing the hose, always use your RIGHT hand when smoking hookah. In some parts of the world, the left hand is considered to be unclean. You may be thinking to yourself, “My left hand is just as clean as my right”. By ignoring this rule, you run the risk of insulting and offending your hosts or guests.

6. Traditionally, hookahs are thought to belong on the floor and not on tables or on any other risen platform. It stems from the idea that hookahs are objects of service. Putting it on a pedestal (or any other seemingly glorifying alter) is considered to be Bad News Bears! Again, this is more of a tradition than a rule. Hookah lounges often adhere to the customs but cannot in every situation.

7. Be mindful not to blow smoke into another person’s face. While shotgunning (a term used to describe the act of blowing smoke from one person’s mouth to another person’s mouth) is not necessarily insulting, a good rule to go by is if the person doesn’t want you to blow your smoke in their face, simply don’t do it! Unwanted smoke in your face (not to mention subsequent breath) is considered rude, impolite, and gross.

8. Another quick tip is not to point your hose directly at someone. Tisk tisk.

9. If you’re smoking a multi-hose hookah, if someone else is smoking, let them finish puffing before taking your turn. Also, do not blow into your hose in an attempt to push smoke up through your friend’s hose and into their face. That’s just rude. See rule 7. And unless you’re in the act of smoking, plug your hose so your friend’s aren’t just sucking air.

10. Promote good hygiene. Always use a mouth tip (but don’t share one). If you’re sick, don’t smoke with friends.

11. When it is your turn, rest the hose in your lap. Do not place it back on the table. Once you have finished with your hookah session, the best way to say “we’re done” is to wrap the hose around the shaft.

12. Don’t be a JONO. Don’t Bogart! While puff puff pass is still respected, some think that each participant should be given 2-3 minutes per turn. If you’re that guy that spends 5-10 minutes trying to perfect the art of smoke rings, do it on your own time. Let your friends/guests have a turn too buddy! Be lighthearted if there is a Bogart among you. Subtle ways of letting him or her know that they’re chiefing the hookah are good enough. Call them out!

13. Hosts should let their guests help in deciding what hookah flavor to smoke. And don’t pick a flavor YOU KNOW someone won’t like. That’s just uncool. Also, if you’re a guest in my house and I invite you over to smoke hookah, do not try and reimburse me. Sharing the hookah experience with my friends is my pleasure.

Smoking hookah is a privilege and a civilized pastime. Having fun, relaxing with your peers, and enjoying a peaceful hookah session is what it’s all about. Don’t ruin the vibe for others! Follow the rules of hookah etiquette and experience the hookah culture in all its wealth. If there are a few tips or rules you would like to add to our list, please feel free to do so by leaving comments below. This is a forum for you to discuss your experiences and traditions as well. I look forward to your feedback! Happy Smoking!

How many hookah smokers out there have ever dropped a coal or two on the floor? It happens more often than any of us would admit. But what we seem to ignore is the severity of our carelessness. Whether we drop the coals while carrying them with our tongs, or maybe we push them off the bowl while repositioning them. I’d be willing to bet most of you leave coals on the hookah and let them die out after you’re done smoking. You may even leave the room (or house) entirely. I’ve been guilty of this a few times, but luckily nothing bad happened. Unfortunately for one individual at the Sigma Chi fraternity house in Gainesville, Florida, he had to learn the hard way. So I thought I’d offer my two cents on safety and fire prevention when smoking hookah to keep the rest of you from making the same mistakes.

These simple steps only take a few seconds and can be the difference between you spending the next two hours enjoying your hookah or spending it dealing with the fire department!

1. Know where your fire extinguisher is, how to use it, and whether or not it’s working properly before you do ANYTHING! Keep it close enough to you so you can respond quickly in case of an emergency. Fire extinguishers only have about 10 seconds of extinguishing power. If you feel you can’t get the fire out yourself in 10 seconds or less, leave the area immediately and call the fire department. For more information on fire safety and fire extinguisher safety, click here.

2. Before you even light your coals, make sure there aren’t any flammable substances in the room.

3. If you use quick light coals, keep in mind that their sparks can blow in any direction at any time depending on wind, air conditioning units, fans, or people walking by, etc. Light them in a safe place.

4. ONLY attempt lighting one or two quick light coals at a time using your tongs. And make sure you have a firm and secure grip on your coals with your tongs. Never hold lit coals over anything that is flammable.

5. If you’re using natural coals, make sure your path between your coal heater and your hookah is clear and open. Also make sure your charcoal holder is secure and appropriate for transportation.

6. Make sure both your hookah and your bowl are level before and after you put your coals on.

7. Be careful with your hoses. Don’t leave them sitting where someone can trip over them, even while you’re holding them.

8. I personally suggest using a wind cover at all times. You end up needing fewer coals to keep the hookah smoking, and it encases the coals safer in the event of your hookah tipping over.

9. Never leave your hookah unattended.

10. When you’re done smoking, I recommend pouring a glass of water 3/4 full and place your leftover coal (that is still lit) in the water using your tongs. This will extinguish them instantly.

So let’s recap: Have your fire extinguisher within a safe distance to respond to any emergency. Invest in a charcoal holder. Eliminate all fire hazards from your hookah area. Light your coals carefully and in a safe place. Place your coals on the hookah bowl safely. Use an HL Bowl or wind cover. Don’t horseplay around your hookah. Make sure your hoses can’t be tripped over. Never leave your hookah unattended. Extinguish all coals that are still burning in a glass of water, or sink full of water. Oh, and enjoy your hookah smoking experience!
