How To: Fix Your Hookah; Quick Fixes and Hacks

If you pay attention to the world of the Internet at all, then you have likely heard of something called a life hack.  A life hack is a quick and simple trick that can make your life easier.  This got us thinking - what are some useful hookah hacks that can quickly and easily improve your hookah set up and overall smoking experience quickly and cheaply.  Below you will find a list of some of our favorite hookah hacks.  We hope you enjoy them.  Feel free to add any we may have missed in the comments section.

The Paper Towel Trick: Make Your Own Grommet In A Pinch

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but one that has always worked great in a pinch.  Have you ever found yourself missing a hose or a bowl grommet?  This can be easily fixed with a piece of paper towel and a bit of water.  Just take a piece of paper towel, get it wet, ring out the majority of the water, and then wrap the damp paper towel around the end of your hose, or the bowl stem, where your grommet would normally go.  The wet paper will make an air-tight seal and you will be smoking in no time.

Rejuvenate Your Old and Dry Shisha with Honey or Agave Nectar

Do you have a tin or bag of older shisha that is too dry to smoke?  Add a squeeze of honey or agave nectar to your old dry shisha and you just might be able to get one last smoke out of it.  Why does this work?  The majority of the smoke (vapor) you see when you are smoking comes from the glycerin, or honey, in your shisha.  When your shisha is dry, you get thin and whispy smoke due to this lack of glycerin.  Add some honey or agave nectar and you can get some life out of that old shisha yet.

Smoke Out Of A Hookah With A Cracked Or Broken Base

This is definitely a hack that will probably only be helpful if you are super desperate, but it's a good one to have in your mind regardless.  Place your broken/cracked base into a large bucket.  Fill the bucket with enough water to come up above the crack or chip in your base where water might escape.  Add water to your base and then set up the rest of your hookah as normal.  Since your leak is now underwater, it's no longer a leak!  The pressure of the water outside of the base is met with the pressure of the water inside of the base and boom, your hookah will smoke like normal.  A truly MacGyver-esque hookah hack.

Increase Air Flow By Modding Your Mouthtips

Insert your mouthpiece into your hookah hose.  Make a note of how far the mouthtip needs to be inserted into the hose before it makes a proper seal.  Remove the mouthtip and, with scissors, cut the tip just past the point where the seal is made.  Since almost all mouthtips taper down to ensure a proper fit on a wide variety of hoses, this will greatly increase the overall airflow through your hose tip.

Make Sure Your Stem and Base Seal Perfectly With Electrical Tape

If your base to stem connection is too loose, take the base grommet off of your stem and wrap the area of the stem where the grommet sits in electrical tape.  Then reattach your grommet and test the seal with the base.  Still not fitting snug?  Add another layer of tape and repeat until the seal is perfect.  If the fit between your base and stem is TOO tight, just remove the base grommet altogether and replace with layers of electrical tape.  The seal will be just as good with just electrical tape as it would be with a proper fitting grommet.

We hope that these hookah hacks will help you out the next time you find yourself in a bind.  If you have any great hookah hacks that were not listed here, be sure to leave them in a comment below.
